HISTORY OF XAVANTE

HISTORY OF XAVANTE

At the end of the sixteenth century, the Portuguese colonists (foreigners who occupied and ruled the area) in Brazil called Amerindians who inhabited the northern part of Goiás region Xavante, for unknown reasons. Amerindian name used for themselves is Auwe, which means people.
The Portuguese government managed to dominate them for the first time in 1784, when the Xavante villages incorporated into the mission surrounded by military guards. Because Xavante have rejected the invasion and domination so hard, colonial governor called the period between 1784 and 1788 the "pacification" (when Xavante reduced to submission).
Life in the village was not a good mission to Xavante.Since then until 1946, the Xavante rejected any attempt contact by people of white skin.
In 1940, the Brazilian government decided to encourage the settlement of land Xavante. Since then, the Xavante have made adjustments to deal with the settlers, who have different habits. However, the Xavante continue to preserve a strong sense of identity.

Until 1988 Xavante, like all Amerindians in Brazil, are not allowed to vote or make decisions for themselves. All Brazilian Amerindians are now regarded as full citizens.
